Sewing Project: Blue and White Laurel Dress

I'm so excited to finally share this project with you all. This is one of the two dresses I made for the Collete Patterns Laurel competition. I put a lot of work into the planning, sewing, and fitting of this dress and I'm really happy with how it turned out!
I made it with a navy and white cotton that I had in my stash (thrifted of course!). The fabric is woven in a sort of hound's tooth-like pattern. changed the pattern a little by adding three inches to the length, making the neckline a little lower and wider, and by adding waist darts to make it a bit more flattering for my shape.

I made this dress to submit for the "detail" category, so I added a faux peter-pan collar, the sleeve and pocket details. I trimmed all of them with mint green piping and some green vintage buttons from my stash. Yay for finally using some of them!

Our friends Jose and Danielle were nice enough to help me take these pictures and edit them for me. I'm so happy with how they turned out! Check out Danielle's blog and you'll see why I asked her to help me!

Thanks for checking out my post! You can see everyone else's submissions on Flickr under the tag "laureldetail". I'll be posting my second dress soon!

Have a great weekend! I'll be spending it working like crazy making things for the craft fair I'll be selling at next month. What are you up to this weekend?

  2. Beautiful!! I love how the collar shape turned out, and the green piping is an inspiration. The darts are a great addition too.

  3. It looks great on you! I love the mint piping! I noticed your pink dress on flickr too...another great creation! Why didn't you include the "laureldetail" tag on it too? I mean, in addition to color and fall.

    1. Thanks Amanda! That's a good idea, I think I'll do that. I have a question for you...can you see both of my dresses shown under the tags? For some reason I can't see either of them when I search the tags and it's starting to worry me!

  8. Love both of your dresses. Did you self draft the collar or use another pattern? I like the idea of adding a collar but not sure how without a pattefn.

    1. Yes, I drafted the collar myself, It was actually pretty easy because it's not a "real" collar- it's just sewn down onto the neckline. Basically I just overlapped the front and back pattern pieces to account for shoulder seam allowances and then traced the neckline onto a piece of butcher paper. Then I just kind of free-handed a collar and then made it a bit larger to account for the piping and seam allowances (I actually added too much at first so I had to make another one). I know there are also tutorials online for drafting your own peter pan collar (Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing has one for sure). Hope that helped somewhat!
